It seems that not one single famous jazz musician or crooner escaped the lens through which Herman Leonard took his amazing black and white portrait photography. From Pearl Bailey to Tony Bennett, from Louis Armstrong to Miles Davis, face upon face of celebrated musician parades before our very eyes. They remind us of the heyday of this musical genre, as well as about its essence: a lust and joy for life, whose every second must be deeply experienced and truly celebrated. Leonard, described as “the greatest jazz photographer in the history of the genre” by none other than President Bill Clinton himself, passed on in 2010. He left us an amazing legacy of history, beauty and passion for music and the people who make it. He learned photography from Yousuf Karsh, whose assistant he was, for shoots of Harry Truman, Albert Einstein, Martha Graham and Clark Gable, among many others.
